The Longest Day

I read in the Mirror
about the sun,
how heat rises through ancient rocks,
creates a searing beam
and catches fire
on the longest, hottest day.
My skin is red,
blistered from exposure,
unprotected, fragile,
but you aim your lens
to steal my spirit.
From up on high
you deliver your news:
your solution
a divine cleansing
of furious flame,
and now the sky burns,
a beacon of ash
and silenced voices,
sheets of blackened cladding
floating to the earth
like headlines.
