CASTLEREAGH

I met Murder on the way
He had a mask like Castlereagh (The Mask of Anarchy; Shelley)

we

forget that satirists

even
poets

had

their own devils

that
pricked

the
romantic part of them

to
anger

that
the worst of times were upon them

nothing

matched
their shameful days

with
wry tears

they
dashed

ink
across parchment and paper

in

fact

Castlereagh

was

more sinned against than sinning

a

sensitive soul

who
at least had the decency to cut his own throat

unlike
Shelley
who
murdered through neglect
selfishness
and
intellectual beauty

history
is written by those with a pleasing style
this
alone
is
a reason for mistrusting those who fancy themselves as philosophers
