New Year, 2017

Hope looks like this

– a festive explosion

in which no-one is injured,

a city set alight

with celebratory rockets

launched from the river

as the music plays,

and a new-born child

being brought home next day

through the shell-filled streets

in which folk still hold hands,

remembering how they drank

from the cup of kindness

and discover to their delight

it cannot be drained.
