nobody speaks

about the Empire anymore (the greatest the world has ever seen)

as if

amnesia

was sprayed like deodoriser

and we forgot

that much of the globe

was red

and the sun never set

upon Artic waste

arid plains

without God Save the Queen

now

only dusty history books (and not all)

mention the facts

genocide in Africa

Irish famines

the partition of India

the goods trains did run on time

apparently

that mattered more than anything
