Briefings
May 17, 2020 12:00 am Leave your thoughts
From the chimneys of bar charts
lives vanish in puffs of smoke.
Ministers furnish statistics
that point to their competence;
they praise, reassure, counsel,
threaten, instruct, do some good.
From their management platforms
they thank us, the British people,
for our guts, our compliance.
We are tough, proud, courageous,
we have battled it all before,
we have never surrendered.
I remember Sir Geoffrey’s players
sent in to open the batting
with kit their own captain let spoil
through neglect or austerity.
Have we learned nothing yet?
Can government never change?
The graph of our suffering
is the graph of my indignation.
